 The
Rev. Douglass M. Bailey, D.D.
Doug
Bailey served as rector of Calvary Church for more than 20 years. When
Doug came to Calvary in 1978, it was a parish in decline. In tandem with
efforts to revitalize the city after the urban crises of the 1960s and
1970s, Doug worked to bring life and soul to this downtown parish. Major
emphasis was placed on congregational development and growth, as well
as the formation of imaginative urban ministries. In those two decades,
Doug founded or co-founded such wide-ranging and vital ministries as the
Calvary Street Ministry for the homeless, the
Samaritan Counseling Center, Teen Job Services employment program,
and Calvary and the Arts noonday concert series.
Doug also
directed efforts to provide quality worship and religious education. A
strong Sunday morning Adult Christian Education and
Youth Church Program complemented a number of weekday
offerings including the popular Wednesday night
Koinonia faith formation and community building programs, attracting people
of all ages and significantly contributing to Calvary's burgeoning membership.
Under Doug Bailey's rectorship, Calvary Church became the fastest growing
Episcopal congregation in the Diocese, and is recognized as one of the
most dynamic and thriving Episcopal churches in America.
In 1998,
Doug was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at Virginia Theological Seminary.
He has also been awarded a Doctor of Divinity by Rhodes College of Memphis
for "outstanding servant ministry to parish, city and world" and earned
a "Peacemaker and Community Service" honor from the Mid-South Peace and
Justice Center. Doug also served as the Presiding Bishop's Appointment
to the Brazil/USA Covenant Committee and has led Clergy Conferences and
Visitations to Uruguay and Brazil.
